Vitreoretinal surgery is a specialty that has rapidly progressed and continues to incorporate new technologies and techniques. The spectrum of vitreoretinal surgical indications has grown because of the increased availability of finer gauged instrumentation with improved safety profiles. These improved techniques have enabled successful management of more severe conditions. We will explore each of these in turn and the surgical techniques which are used to treat them. It is important for the community optometrist to be aware of these developments in order to continue to refer patients appropriately and to offer advice to patients when required.....
